Fire Suppression Systems

NFPA 17

The NFPA 17 standard outlines the minimum requirements for dry chemical fire extinguishing systems to ensure their effectiveness in protecting life and property from fire hazards. It covers the design, installation, operation, testing, and maintenance of these systems, which are commonly used in commercial kitchens, industrial facilities, and machinery spaces. The 2024 edition includes updates such as enhanced detection and activation requirements, revised design criteria for specific hazard classes, and improved testing and maintenance procedures to ensure optimal performance and safety.

NFPA 17A

NFPA 17A is the standard for wet chemical extinguishing systems, providing requirements for system design, installation, operation, testing, and maintenance. These systems are specifically designed for Class K (cooking media) fires and are the preferred method for protecting commercial cooking operations. NFPA 17A systems work through saponification, creating a foam blanket that suppresses vapors and prevents re-ignition. The 2021 edition includes updated requirements for system components, agent quantities, and maintenance procedures. NFPA 17A mandates specific installation procedures and regular maintenance to ensure system reliability.
